Vanderbilt sophomore guard Isaiah Rice was named to the SEC Community Service Team Monday by the league office in Birmingham, Ala. for his work off of the floor this season.
Rice, from Indianapolis, Ind., participated in Vanderbilt Athletics’ Hurricane Harvey Donation Drive and Holiday Party benefitting Caldwell Elementary this season, and served as a classroom aid at Buena Vista Elementary. He also participated in a Health and Wellness Donation Drive benefitting Buena Vista Elementary, while also starting a program at the school called BoysIIMen, where Rice met with a group of four or five boys each week to mentor them. He taught them the importance of education, talked about life and played with them outside.
He also read to first graders at Percy Priest Elementary for Read Me Month and helped raise over $5000 in two weeks for Vanderbilt Dance Marathon benefitting Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. He also adopted and hosted a Dance Marathon Miracle family at a basketball practice and interacted with Miracle Families at the Dance Marathon Big Event.
