Vanderbilt women's tennis begins 2021-22 campaign at Furman

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis will begin its 2021-22 season Friday through Sunday at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.

Among the 13 participating teams at the Mickel Tennis Center this weekend, 11 were ranked among the Top 35 at the end of last season. The full field will include, Furman, North Carolina, Florida State, Vanderbilt, Texas, Wake Forest, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Duke, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Clemson. Each day of competition will begin at 9 a.m. Friday will consist of two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles, Saturday will be a round of doubles and singles and Sunday will include a round of singles.

Sophomore Holly Staff and junior Anna Ross will start the 2021-22 campaign as the No. 9-ranked doubles team. The pair ranked as high as No. 18 in the ITA doubles rankings last season as the two topped four ranked foes, including a second-ranked duo from Florida, a 16th-ranked duo from South Carolina, a 25th-ranked duo from Tennessee and a 28th-ranked duo from Arkansas.

In addition, a new Commodore pairing of junior Marcella Cruz and graduate transfer MaryAnn Rompf will start the season as the nation’s 48th-ranked doubles team.

Following the meet, Vanderbilt will host its June Stewart Invitational, Oct. 8-10.
