NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.
Vanderbilt baseball has a single game at home during the week while the Commodore soccer squad returns to action after a long layoff. The Vandy women’s tennis team has a pair of vital matches this week on West End as well.
Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:
Baseball
Vanderbilt had an exhilarating and memorable weekend, one that included a series win over South Carolina, a 14-strikeout performance from Kumar Rocker and a no-hitter by Jack Leiter. The Commodores are now 15-3 and 2-1 in the SEC.
Vandy is right back at it at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when it welcomes cross-town rival Lipscomb (7-7) to Hawkins Field. The Dores then hit the road for a three-game series running Thursday-Saturday at Missouri (8-12, 1-2 SEC)
Lacrosse
The Vandy lacrosse team kept rolling along this past weekend in the Queen City with a sweep at league rival Cincinnait. A 10-8 win Friday was followed by a come-from-behind, 16-14 victory Sunday making the Commodores 7-2 and 2-0 to start the American Athletic Conference slate.
This weekend Vanderbilt heads to East Carolina for a 3 p.m. CT match Friday and an 11 a.m. Sunday contest. The Pirates are 3-5 and 1-1 in league play.
Soccer
After having its Sunday match with Lipscomb called off, Vanderbilt will hope to return to the pitch at 6 p.m. Saturday against Memphis.
The Commodores have been off since March 11 when it defeated visiting Kennesaw State 3-1. Madi Allen, Raegan Kelley and Haley Hopkins scored in the first of four matches leading up to the NCAA Tournament in April.
Memphis (6-1) comes to town on a four-match winning streak. The Tigers won 2-1 at Temple on Sunday and their only loss is a 3-1 setback at Ole Miss on the first day of March.
Men’s golf
Head coach Scott Limbaugh’s team will look to keep its solid play going when it travels to West Point, Mississippi, for the Old Waverly Collegiate hosted by Mississippi State.
Vandy is coming off a third-place finish at the Tiger Invitational on March 17. The Dores have two top-three finishes this spring.
This weekend’s tournament is the penultimate event for Vanderbilt before the start of the postseason in April.
Women’s tennis
Vanderbilt (12-3, 4-3 SEC) was upended 4-1 against visiting Texas A&M over the weekend. The Commodores will look to get back on track with a pair of home matches this weekend against rivals Tennessee and Georgia, respectively.
The Volunteers (9-5, 3-3 SEC) come to the Currey Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Friday while the Bulldogs (10-1, 6-0 SEC) will be in town at noon Sunday.
Track and field
Vanderbilt got off to a record-setting start in its first outdoor track and field meet in nearly two years. A trio of school records highlighted the season-opening Tiger Classic in Auburn, Alabama, over the weekend.
The Commodores will now waste no time getting back on the track with two meets next weekend when they travel to at N.C. State’s Raleigh Relays and the Bulldog Relays at Mississippi State.
Men’s tennis
The Commodores (4-9, 0-6 SEC) will again be looking to break a long losing streak this week when they play three matches, two of which are on the road.
Vandy hosts DePaul at 9 a.m. Wednesday, then heads out on the road for a pair of league tilts. The Dores are scheduled to be at Tennessee at noon CT Friday and at Georgia at noon Sunday.
