CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team wrapped up day two of the Miami Spring Invite with two doubles and six singles victories Sunday at the Neill Schiff Tennis Center.
“The improvement from yesterday was remarkable,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “We battled to win some close matches, it was really impressive. Today was a quality showing by the team.”
Vanderbilt opened the day by facing Miami in doubles play.
Senior Emma Kurtz and freshman Anna Ross teamed up to take down Miami pair Estela Perez-Somarriba and Maya Tahan 6-2 while freshman Dasha Kourkina and junior Amanda Meyer outlasted Yuna Ito and Florencia Urrutia 7-5.
In singles, the Dores earned an impressive 6-1 record against Oklahoma.
Winning in straight sets, senior Christina Rosca defeated Oleksandra Korashvili 6-1, 6-1 while Kurtz downed Ivana Corley 6-3, 6-2.
Kourkina earned a dominant day two to remain undefeated in singles play in the invite with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jasmine Asghar followed by fellow freshman Ross making a comeback to outlast Camila Romero 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Sophomore Georgia Drummy remains undefeated in singles with a strong win over ranked opponent Martina Capurro 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Meyer closed out day two for the Dores on top with a 7-6 (8), 6-4, victory over Kianah Motosono.
The Commodores will return to action Monday to compete in the final day of the Miami Spring Invite. Vanderbilt will open by facing Northwestern in doubles play followed by taking on Miami in singles.
