Commodores Host 36 Games at Hawkins Field

Nashville, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Head Baseball Coach Tim Corbin has announced the 2005 Vanderbilt Baseball schedule which features 36 home games, including the Music City Classic and four SEC homestands.

2005 Baseball Schedule

Ten teams played in last season’s NCAA Tournament (Arkansas, Georgia, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Mississippi, Western Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee and Florida) with four teams advancing to the College World Series (Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and LSU).

The Commodores open the season with seven consecutive home games beginning Feb. 18 (Friday) with a three-game homestand against VMI. The Commodores then play Tennessee-Martin before hosting the Music City Classic Feb. 25-27. Vanderbilt hosts Boston College Feb. 25 (Friday), Illinois State Feb. 26 (Saturday) and Connecticut Feb. 27 (Sunday). Vanderbilt then plays at Lipscomb (March 1) before hosting Ball State and Baylor in three-game homestands.

“We have more home games than normal, but that wasn’t by design,” Corbin said. “There were some teams from the northeast that wanted to play us here in Nashville. I’d like to have a road test before conference play, but I also like playing at Hawkins Field.”

VU opens Southeastern Conference play on the road March 18-20 when they play Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss.. The Commodores’ first conference homestand is March 25-27 when they host Alabama at Hawkins Field.

“The league will be very similar to last season,” Corbin added. “Teams now have their coaching staffs in place and have great players returning. You look at everyone and wonder how you’re going to get by them when you play them.”

Last year, the Commodores recorded their most historic season winning a school record 45 games and making their first appearance in the NCAA Super Regional. Vanderbilt advanced to the SEC Championship game and lost a one-run contest to tournament champion South Carolina.
