Dores in Pros

Vanderbilt was well represented when Major League Baseball clubs announced their initial 60-man player pools for the resumption of spring training in July 2020.

Sixteen former Commodore student-athletes across 11 organizations were part of player pools. Four clubs boast multiple Vanderbilt participants including the Los Angeles Dodgers (Walker Buehler, David Price), Cincinnati Reds (Curt Casali, Sunny Gray), Atlanta Braves (Philip Pfeifer, Dansby Swanson, Kyle Wright) and San Francisco Giants (Sam Selman, Mike Yastrzemski).

The Commodores led the nation with 15 former players who made an MLB appearance in 2019 including nine pitchers. Walker Buehler (Los Angeles Dodgers), Sonny Gray (Cincinnati Reds) and Mike Minor (Texas Rangers) were tabbed MLB All-Stars and became the first trio from the same university to eclipse 200 strikeouts in a single season.

Bryan Reynolds (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Mike Yastrzemski (San Francisco Giants) captivated fans with phenomenal rookie seasons. Reynolds finished with the highest batting average (.314) for a switch-hitting MLB rookie since 1896. Yastrzemski swatted 21 home runs and totaled 55 RBIs across 107 games while batting .272.
