Vanderbilt picked to finish second in the SEC East

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 4 Vanderbilt Commodores were picked to finish second in the SEC East while two Commodores were recognized on the coaches’ preseason all-conference team, the league office announced Thursday.

Junior right-hander Kumar Rocker received first-team honors while teammate Jack Leiter was selected to the second team.

The Commodores  garnered 79 total points, good for second-most in the conference behind Florida, who tallied 91 points. Twelve of the league’s 14 coaches chose the Gators as the conference’s preseason favorite while Mississippi State and Vanderbilt received one vote apiece.

Points were compiled on a descending basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion. For the sixth consecutive year, two preseason all-SEC teams were selected by league head coaches.

Vanderbilt opens the season Feb. 19 when welcoming Wright State to Hawkins Field for a three-game weekend series. It marks just the second time in the past five seasons that the Commodores will begin the season at home.
