“I think this weekend showed that we are growing in a lot of areas, but still have spots that we absolutely have to improve if we want to consistently compete for championships,” said first-year head coach Josie Barnes. “Kate was very impressive this weekend. Friday got off to a rocky start for her, but she was able to lock in and be outstanding from Saturday morning on; I think she only missed the pocket four times on Saturday. Dannielle is continuing to show that her hard work in the offseason is paying off. She threw strikes this weekend when we needed them, and she was fantastic this weekend when it came to spare shooting.”
The Commodores opened the day with a lineup of Haley Lindley, Henderson, Natalie Kent, Saphyre Nofuente and Abigania for their final traditional pool play match against Tulane, with four of the five posting scores over 200 to help Vandy claim a 1,113-949 victory and earn the second seed in the final bracket.
In their opening bracket play Baker match the Dores fell 4-0 to No. 5 Nebraska, although they responded with three consecutive 200-plus games before third-ranked Wichita State rallied for a 4-3 win in the third-place match.
Vanderbilt will next be in action at Louisiana Tech’s Bulldog Classic, which will take place Friday-Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
“Our freshmen had quality frames this weekend as well. They have proven the last two weeks that they aren’t afraid of the ball in big moments,” Barnes added. “We have a quick turnaround this week as we head to San Antonio, so we will get back to work, take the positives from the week, and head into Texas with a fresh game plan.”
