NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.
Vanderbilt football will be front-and-center this weekend when it hosts its annual spring game. That event is open to the public.
Vandy’s baseball and lacrosse teams have crucial contests on the road this weekend and the Vanderbilt women’s golf team begins the postseason in Birmingham, Alabama.
Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:
Football
Clark Lea and the Vanderbilt football team take center stage at 11 a.m. Saturday for the program’s annual spring game. The event marks the first spring game for the former Vandy fullback and first-year head coach.
The Commodores will have completed 14 training sessions – three this week – before Saturday’s event which is open to the public. The spring game will also be streamed live on SEC Network+.
Lacrosse
After a weekend off, the Vandy lacrosse team faces its biggest test of the season when it travels to rival Florida.
The AAC preseason favorite, Florida is 9-2, 6-0 in league play and ranked ninth in the nation. Vanderbilt (11-2, 6-0 AAC), which last played April 3, is on a nine-game winning streak for head coach Beth Hewitt.
Friday’s contest between the AAC’s top two teams is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT with Sunday’s finale scheduled for noon CT.
Baseball
After a tough weekend at The Hawk, Vanderbilt will look to bounce back this week after dropping 2 of 3 to Georgia.
The Commodores (25-5, 9-3 SEC) host Eastern Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before a major weekend series beginning Friday at rival Tennessee. The Volunteers (27-6, 9-3) and Dores are tied for first in the SEC’s East Division.
Women’s golf
The Southeastern Conference women’s golf championship begins Wednesday in Birmingham, Alabama, at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Vandy will be one of 14 teams competing in the competition. Head coach Greg Allen saw his team recently finish in a tie for second at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic.
The championship will feature both stroke and match play with match play Saturday and Sunday. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three days of the championship. The final round Sunday will be televised live on SEC Network.
Track and field
The Vandy track and field team will play host to a large field of competition Friday and Saturday during the Black and Gold Invitational.
Vanderbilt competed last weekend in both Knoxville and Miami, Florida, where sophomore Madison Fuller took more time off her school record in the 100 meters and the Commodores won three events and posted seven top-10 times.
