NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.
The Vanderbilt basketball teams will have a busy week as each tries to fit a pair of contests this week. Vandy’s men’s squad will be at home Wednesday afternoon and Saturday night while the women are scheduled to play Thursday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
On the football side, the Commodores’ 2020 season ended Saturday against Tennessee. But Wednesday remains a big day as the program can sign student-athletes to a letter of intent to join the 2021 roster.
Here’s more of all the other happenings around West End this week:
Men’s basketball
After an 84-41 beating of Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, the Vanderbilt men’s basketball team has a much tougher week ahead.
The Commodores (2-0) first welcome Richmond for a rare Wednesday matinee at Memorial Gymnasium. The Spiders (4-1) fell just barely out of The Associated Press Top 25 this week after a loss to West Virginia over the weekend.
Vandy lost to Richmond in Virginia last season 93-92 in overtime. This year’s matchup – scheduled for noon Wednesday and on the SEC Network – will feature a retooled roster for head coach Jerry Stackhouse who said Sunday he may still be without some key players this week due to COVID-19 precautions.
On Saturday night, Vanderbilt will entertain Radford (2-4) for a 7 p.m. contest.
Women’s basketball
After a thrilling, come-from-behind victory at Chattanooga on Sunday, head coach Stephanie White’s unit returns home for two matchups this week.
Vandy (2-1) has won two in a row after a season-opening loss and welcomes in Virginia Commonwealth for a 2 p.m. tilt Thursday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Rams have lost two in a row and in are in the midst of a six-game road trip.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, the Commodores will go up against Radford (0-4).
Football
Early Wednesday the Vanderbilt football program will fire up the fax machine and anxiously await for signed letters of intent from recruiting prospects from around the country.
Excitement already took hold on West End earlier this week when Clark Lea was announced as the team’s new head coach. Now future Commodores will have the chance to be a part of Lea’s first Vanderbilt team in 2021.
