Vanderbilt sweeps OSU in fall action

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt served up another dominant pitching performance and captured a 14-inning victory en route to sweeping the two-game set against Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.
 
The Commodores defeated the Cowboys, 9-3 on Sunday. Vanderbilt won both 14-inning outings, as well, by the predetermined scoring system – which allowed opportunities to secure points on offense and defense – by a total of 68-33. 
 
OSU SERIES BY THE NUMBERS

  • Thirteen Vanderbilt pitchers limited OSU batters to a .132 batting average while posting a 1.95 ERA.
  • In total, 12 Commodore freshmen made their unofficial debuts.
  • Senior Julian Infante led the squad in hits (5) and batting average (.556). Walker Grisanti scored a team-best four runs and was one of six players to record two walks.
  • In 28 innings, VU pitching permitted just 12 hits – including four of the extra-base variety. The staff struck out 39 batters including eight from Kumar Rocker.
  • A total of 17 different Commodores notched at least one hit including Pat DeMarco and Harrison Ray who added four apiece. DeMarco led all Dores with nine total bases followed by Infante (7), Austin Martin (5) and Ray (5).

Vanderbilt jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Ray drove a one-out double into left field and Cooper Davis lifted a first-pitch sacrifice fly into left. Three innings later, the Commodores worked three walks and Martin added an RBI-single as part of a two-run frame.
 
Matt Hogan contributed an RBI-double in the sixth and Ethan Paul added another on an RBI-single in the seventh. Drake Fellows fanned four batters in two scoreless innings while Hugh Fisher added a hitless frame. AJ Franklin limited the Cowboys to a hit in 1.1 innings.
 
Vandy notched 10 hits in the seven frames but put across just two runs until the final inning. With the game knotted at two, Grisanti started a two-out rally with a wall-ball double. Following a Dominic Keegan walk, Sterling Hayes provided a game-winning single up the middle.
 
The Commodores continue training through Nov. 8 when they host the Black and Gold World Series which runs through Saturday, Nov. 10 at The Hawk. Admission is free to all training sessions as well as the Black and Gold Series.
