Memorial Madness. The Commodore basketball teams will host Memorial Madness to kick off fall practice on Friday, October 14 at 8 p.m. CT inside Memorial Gym. Activities include an autograph session, scrimmage, dunk contest and more. Admission is free.
Making history. After a seventh place finish at the highly-competitive Roy Griak Invitational, the women’s cross country team vaulted into the USTFCCCA national rankings for the first time in school history. “First time (in the polls) is great, and we should celebrate this,” Head Coach Steve Keith said. “The ladies want to win the SEC and they want to be at a higher number at the national championships, so this is one step along the way.”
Tristan Strong out for year. Starting linebacker Tristan Strong will miss the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury in the South Carolina game last Saturday. Look for Archibald Barnes to be the leading candidate to replace Strong.
Wild Card Excitement. With Tampa Bay tied with Boston for the American League Wild Card, David Price will take the hill for the Rays against the Yankees tonight in the final game of the regular season. If Tampa Bay wins and Boston loses to Baltimore, the Rays will be in the playoffs. If the two teams remain tied after today’s games, the Rays and Red Sox will meet in a one-game Wild Card tiebreaker Thursday at Tropicana Field. Also, Mike Minor, Antoan Richardson and the Braves are currently tied for the National League Wild Card with the Cardinals.
14 teams in the SEC? According to Jon Solomon’s report in The Birmingham News, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said in a teleconference Tuesday that there are no teams currently under consideration to become the 14th member in the conference and that Texas A&M has been the only school to apply. Slive also suggested that the BCS might consider dropping the two-team limit on conferences in their bowl games.
