Thursday Recap: Gold 6, Black 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Gold Team claimed the Black & Gold series with a 7-1 win over the Black Team Friday night at Hawkins Field in the second game of the three-game series.

A sloppy first inning by the Black Team led to a pair of runs for the Gold Team and gave Gold senior starter Taylor Hill all the run support he needed. Hill tossed four perfect innings before finally giving up a single to junior Jason Esposito to lead off the fifth. That was the only base runner Hill allowed as the right-hander cruised through five innings to earn the win striking out six and issuing no walks.

Three Black Team errors in the first set the tone for a sloppy defensive game with the two teams combining for eight errors on the night, six by the Black Team. Senior Curt Casali and freshman Josh Lee each had two hits and junior Aaron Westlake scored three runs to lead the Gold Team. Redshirt freshman Nate Gonzalez drove in the lone run for the Black squad with a double in the eighth inning.

Freshman Steven Rice took the loss for the Black Team allowing three unearned runs on two hits and four walks over three innings. Fellow freshman Kevin Ziomek struck out two in his lone inning of work for the Gold Team. Junior Navery Moore fanned four in his two innings for the Black Team.

The Commodores will wrap up the Black & Gold Series on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field with game time slated for 1 p.m. CT.
