Freshman runner Peter DelNero talks about his experience with his Swiss friend Elias and his hometown of Kansas City, Kan.

The men’s team recently bid farewell to our wonderful Swiss friend, Elias. An international student studying bio-informatics with the med-school, Elias accompanied us on many runs throughout the last few months. His sense of humor and charming accent will be greatly missed. The one thing I will always remember about Elias is his passion for chocolate milkshakes. He would drink two or three a day. At one point I asked him why he drank so many milkshakes, and he said that it reminded him of the delicious hot chocolate from Switzerland. In his opinion, American hot chocolate is too thin because it is mixed with water. Elias returned to Switzerland to fulfill his military duties through July and drink real cocoa. So long, Elias.

The winter months have brought some cold and windy runs, but nothing to complain about compared to my hometown of Kansas City, Kan., where the wind-chill drops below negative ten on a regular basis. In fact, the forecasted “winter mix” ended up as a beautiful, clear afternoon in the mid-forties. I am glad I moved south for the winter!

As a freshman on the cross country team, I am enjoying my experience immensely. We also have good times outside of practice, sometimes involving pumpkins and catapults. Currently, we are all looking forward to the upcoming track season with great anticipation.

All the best,
Peter DelNero
