Gold Team Defeats Black Team, 8-6

10/9/2004

Nashville, Tenn. — Antoan Richardson collected a hit, a run and a game-leading three RBI to help lead the Gold Team to an 8-6 victory over the Black Team today at Hawkins Field. The Gold Team now leads 2-0 in the Intrasquad Series which concludes tomorrow at 1 pm.

Redshirt freshman Cody Crowell earned the win going 2.0 innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. Sophomore Greg Moviel picked up the loss going 3.1 innings giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out one and walking four.

“There were more runs scored today, but that was because the pitching was a little sloppy,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said.

The Black Team rallied in the top of the ninth with two outs when David Macius drove in Gil Kim who reached on a bunt to narrow the lead to two, 8-6. With runners at second and third, Jensen Lewis came in relief and threw one pitch that Adam Cronk popped up to right field to end the game for his second save in the series..

“The Black Team did a great job in the final inning fighting back,” Corbin said. “David Macius got a hit with two away and then (Matt) Zeller singled and moved to second with the bobble in left field – they were back in it.”

“It was a competitive game and I like that. You would like to see them all do well – pitching, hitting and defense – but in a intrasquad scrimmage, that can’t happen.”

The Gold Team led 3-0 going into the third inning with runs from Richardson, Warner Jones and Carter Hawkins. The Black Team took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Shea Robin scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad French. Gil Kim and Bill Kleinschrodt both reached on singles with Kim scoring on a wild pitch and Kleinschrodt scoring after an Aaron Garza single to center field.

The Gold Team tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth. Hawkins reached base after being hit by a Moviel pitch and moved to third on a Greg Del George single to the right side. Richardson singled to left field scoring Hawkins and moving Del George to second. Rucker Taylor walked to load the bases for Jones who hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Del George. Kim made a diving stop at second to end the inning for the Black Team.

The Gold Team added one more in the fifth when Stephen Shao scored after Richardson was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game with bases loaded by Moviel. The Gold Team finished its scoring in the seventh inning when Tony Mansolino scored on a Jonathan White triple and a Rucker Taylor single that scored White.

Both teams totaled 10 hits in the contest. Mansolino totaled three hits for the Gold Team, followed by Jones with two. Kim numbered three hits for the Black Team, followed by Zeller with two.

Freshman David Price started on the mound for the Black Team and went 3.0 innings giving up three runs on four hits. Tyler Rhoden finished the game for the Black going 1.2 innings in relief of Moviel. Rhoden faced five batters and walked one.

Sophomore Michael Wagner was the Gold Team starter and went 4.0 innings giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out three. Redshirt freshman Ty Davis went 2.2 innings giving up one run on three hits and struck out two.
