GOLD TEAM DEFEATS BLACK TEAM, 3-2

Nashville, Tenn. – Junior Warner Jones and freshman Ryan Davis each collected two hits and one RBI to help lead the Gold Team to a 3-2 victory over the Black Team in the Commodore’s intrasquad scrimmage tonight at Hawkins Field.

Senior Ryan Rote earned the win going 3.0 innings giving up two hits and striking out two. Junior Jeff Sues took the loss going 4.0 innings giving up one run (unearned) on two hits and striking out four. Senior Antoan Richardson led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a throwing error by Sues. Richardson then scored on a Jones single to right field.

After four scoreless innings, the Gold Team scored two more runs in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 3-0. Jones singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Mike Baxter. Davis then singled to left field scoring Jones with Davis moving to second on the throw. Davis advanced to third on a wild pitch by junior Ryan Mullins and scored when junior Rucker Taylor singled to the left side of the infield. The Black Team scored one run in the seventh and eighth innings to narrow the margin to one, 3-2.

The Gold Team’s pitching staff retired 12 consecutive batters before senior Matt Zeller led off the seventh inning for the Black Team with a single up the middle and moved to second on a ground out by sophomore Bill Kleinschrodt. Zeller moved to third on a wild pitch by Stephen Shao and scored when freshman Adam Cronk singled up the middle. Freshman Shea Robin began the the eighth inning with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gil Kim. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Jensen Lewis and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Aaron Garza.

“The runs scored were defensive miscues,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “And that’s basically SEC baseball – the games are going to be tight and you separate them by the ability to catch and throw the ball.”

The Gold Team totaled seven hits, led by Jones and Davis with two each. Shao, Taylor and sophomore Carter Hawkins each added a single. The Black Team collected five singles, including hits from Zeller, Kleinschrodt, Cronk, Robin and junior Brian Hernandez. Junior Matt Buschmann went 3.0 hitless innings, while Shao went 1.0 innings giving up one run on two hits. Junior Jensen Lewis earned the save going the final two innings giving up one run on one hit. Junior Ryan Mullins pitched the final 5.0 innings for the Black Team giving up two runs on five hits while striking out seven.

Game Two of the Black & Gold Series is Saturday (Oct. 9) at 11 am at Hawkins Field. Admission is free.
