NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt men’s tennis fell short to No. 13 Texas A&M 6-1 in their second SEC matchup of the season Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.
“We’re not playing very good tennis right now. I feel like we started the first eight matches of the season really competing well and playing well, but the last three matches have been well below expectations,” Vanderbilt head coach Ian Duvenhage said. “We need to get it together.”
The Aggies struck first to claim the doubles point over the Dores with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles.
Commodore duo Christiaan Worst and Adam Sraberg fell short 7-5 followed by Texas A&M clinching the doubles point with a 6-2 win over senior tandem Panu Virtanen and Billy Rowe.
In singles, the Aggies swiftly advanced their lead to 3-0 over the Dores with wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 in the line. Junior George Harwell fell 6-0, 6-0 followed by Rowe falling 6-4, 6-2.
Freeman’s 7-5, 6-1 loss clinched the match for the Aggies.
The teams decided to play the match out where Virtanen put the Dores on the board with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (3) win at No. 5 to mark the final score at 6-1.
Vanderbilt will return to action Friday to face Auburn in its third SEC matchup of the campaign.
