Commodore Notes
Vanderbilt won three of four games last week, beating Western Kentucky on Tuesday before taking two of three against No. 23 Florida over the weekend. Vanderbilt clubbed three home runs in Tuesday’s win over WKU. Vandy starter Devin Futrell went 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven to pick up his team-leading seventh win on the campaign. The freshman southpaw sat down the first 11 Hilltoppers he faced. With the win, the Commodores push their home midweek win streak to 28 games. All three games against No. 23 Florida were decided by a total of four runs, including a pair of tight one-run matchups in the bookend games of the weekend series. Jack Bulger lined a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lead Vanderbilt past the Gators, 5-4, on Friday. The Commodores used a four-run sixth inning to overcome an early deficit on Saturday. After Florida pulled even at 6-6 in the top of the seventh, Vanderbilt used a Tate Kolwyck RBI single to go in front for good, clinching the series with an 8-6 victory. The Dores were trailing 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday when Jack Bulger launched a game-tying two-run homer, forcing the game to extras. Florida avoided the sweep with a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the tenth, winning the series finale 4-3.
