Commodore Notes
The Commodores won three of their four games on the week and claimed the series at No. 4 Arkansas with wins in Games 1 and 3. The week started with a thrilling come-from-behind win on Tuesday evening against Indiana State. The Dores scored four runs in the ninth to force extra innings and then got a walk-off single from Spencer Jones in the 11th to stun the visiting Sycamores with an 8-7 victory at Hawkins Field. The Commodores had fought back from down 4-0 to within 4-3 going into the ninth. Then Indiana State seemingly put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the inning. After a two-run homer and an RBI infield single, Enrique Bradfield did the unthinkable and stole home with two outs to tie the game. In the 11th, Bradfield was at third with two outs when Jones strode to the plate, eventually scoring the winning run. Vanderbilt then hit the road to Fayetteville, Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks for three games. A three-run homer from Bradfield in the 10th inning powered Vanderbilt to a 9-6 victory in Game 1 on Friday evening at Baum-Walker Stadium. Thomas Schultz worked the final 3.0 innings, holding the Razorbacks hitless to pick up his fourth win on the season. Game 2 was suspended in the bottom of the sixth with Arkansas in front, 8-6, due to lightning. The two sides resumed play Sunday morning and the Razorbacks held on to win 11-6. With the series even heading into Game 3, Vanderbilt received an impressive performance from starter Carter Holton, as the team picked up its 10th shutout on the season. The Dores took the series, winning the seven-inning contest 5-0. Holton (7-3) notched his second complete game on the year with 7.0 scoreless frames to earn his seventh win this season. He held the Arkansas offense to just two hits in the game, while walking four batters and striking out five. With the performance, the Commodores earned their first series win at Arkansas since the 2011 season, while handing the Razorbacks their first series loss at home on the season.
