NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Liz Sherwood scored 24 points, and Christina Wirth added 19 to help Vanderbilt rout Belmont 104-43 on Friday in the first round of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Commodores (4-1) led by 32 points in the first half and pushed the advantage to 65 in the second.

“I think one of the things was getting off to a better start and Liz (Sherwood) got off to a better start,” said Vanderbilt head coach Melanie Balcomb. “She may have missed her first shot but she was aggressive going after the basketball and went at the basket. That’s what we want is for her to be aggressive from the start. We are looking to get the ball to her obviously and we need her to be aggressive right away and I think that helped build our confidence and we wanted to get after Belmont early.”

Shaunda Strayhorn had 10 points for Belmont (2-4). The Bruins, coming off their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance last season, hadn’t played Vanderbilt in 16 years.

In the title game Sunday, Vanderbilt will meet Iowa State, who defeated Michigan 67-43 in Friday’s second game.
