Vandy Moves Into Fifth

Commodores to resume third round Wednesday

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Vanderbilt completed its second round of competition Tuesday at the Gamecock Intercollegiate and got through almost half of its third round before darkness set in at the Columbia Country Club.

The Commodores will begin Wednesday’s final day of action 16 strokes off the lead and in fifth place. Vandy was 3-under-par when play ended Tuesday.

A 10:30 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled for Wednesday.

“I loved how we pulled it together and started playing golf the way I know we can play,” Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen said of his team’s play during the afternoon session. “We’ve still got work to do Wednesday. It will be fun to see how we come out and battle.”

Vandy junior Auston Kim moved into a tie for fifth place thanks to two birdies through her first nine holes of her third round Tuesday. She’s six shots back of Duke’s Erica Shepherd.

Celina Sattelkau, a sophomore, is having another solid tournament and is tied for 17th at 2-over-par. Morgan Baxendale and Louise Yu are each in 46th place at 7-over-par while Virginie Ding is 15-over-par and is tied for 85th.

Ariel Yu, playing as an individual, is in 92nd place at 20-over-par.

Vanderbilt struggled mightily to begin the day Tuesday. The Commodores shot 12-over-par as a team, yet remained in eighth place when their second set of 18 holes was finished.

Louise Yu had the best second round of any Commodore with a 73 while Kim shot a 74.

“I thought the course and conditions were tough for the morning round and we really didn’t have anybody step up,” Allen said. “We talked about how the start of the afternoon round was like a reset button. It was a blank scoreboard and a fresh start.”

Duke leads the field at 4-under-par while South Carolina (+2) is in second and Wake Forest (+3) is in third.
