NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Three Vanderbilt men’s tennis players will begin the final day of the Commodore Scramble with perfect singles records on Sunday. Against five other schools, Vanderbilt again stood its ground for the second day in a row in singles, suffering just five losses on the day.
Vandy began the day at 9 a.m. with doubles play as Cameron Klinger and Billy Rowe picked up their first win of the tournament. The sophomore/freshman duo powered past cross-town opponents in Lipscomb’s Mitchell/Manzanares, 8-3.
Vikram Chari and Alex Ross also generated a tandems victory for the black and gold, coming out on top of a battle against the Bisons’ Courteau/Wong, 8-6
After four rounds of singles matches, three Commodores remain undefeated as No. 21 Valent, Klinger and Rowe all head into the final day of competition with spotless records. Valent and Klinger have defeated all four of their opponents in straight sets.
A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Valent handed a pair of Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 6-2, 6-3 losses. Klinger also made quick work of his opponents, defeating Lipscomb’s Alejandro Manzanares, 6-3, 6-1 and Belmont’s Cedric Dujacquier, 6-1, 6-3.
After falling in his first set tiebreaker against Lipscomb’s Daniel Cardenas, Rowe battled back to remain perfect, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. The freshman later downed Tech’s Jorge Alfonzo in a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory.
First serve on Sunday is scheduled for 9 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
