Taking Aim in Alabama

Vandy heads to Tigers Invitational for three-day event

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s golf takes its show to The Plains this week when it tees it up at the Tiger Invitational starting Monday in Alabama.

The Commodores have been off since Feb. 28 when it finished second at the LSU Invitational.

“It’s been a nice couple of weeks at home to have some time to focus on improvement and catch our breath before these last three events of the spring season,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “We know what we have to continue to do better physically and it is all of our responsibility to be fully committed to improving in those areas.

“As the season continues, the goal is for the team to continue to take ownership of our actions and our results. It’s about finding enough guys that want to play with courage. That means having the ability to be fully present during adversity and staying in the fight which is not always easy to do.”

Limbaugh will take William Moll, Reid Davenport, Harrison Ott, Matthew Riedel and Cole Sherwood with him this week to compete for Vandy. Junior Michael Shears will participate as an individual.

The Tiger Invitational will take place Monday and Tuesday at Grand National on the Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama. The par-72 course runs 7,289 yards.

Participating teams include Alabama, UAB, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Southern, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, South Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, two squads from host Auburn and Vanderbilt.

“It’s fun to be going to another SEC city and course,” Limbaugh said. “The Robert Trent Jones Lake Course in Opelika is a good course that hosted several PGA Tour tournaments so it should be a good test against another strong field.”

Vanderbilt has played in two tournaments during the spring season. A seventh-place finish at the Gators Invitational in Florida and second – by just two strokes – in Louisiana at the aforementioned LSU Invitational.

This week’s event will be the first of three before the Southeastern Conference championship April 21-25 on Sea Island, Georgia.

Vanderbilt is scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The event will begin with a shotgun start and teams will attempt to play 36 holes Monday and have the final 18 completed by Wednesday.

“I’m having a lot of fun with this team because they are coachable and they want to compete.  The challenge with any team is to keep the guys fully engaged,” Limbaugh said. “We want to keep our egos in check, lessen comparison and have one shared goal to become the very best team we can be.”
