Head coach Scott Brown announced Geoff Hernandez’s appointment as assistant coach on June 12, 2023. Hernandez previously served as volunteer assistant coach during the 2022–23 season under former head coach Ian Duvenhage.
He joined Vanderbilt after five years as Lipscomb men’s tennis head coach, which followed three years as an assistant at that Nashville school. During that time, Hernandez guided Lipscomb to the first two winning seasons in program history and lifted the Bisons as high as No. 65 in the ITA rankings.
Under Hernandez, Victor Chaw and Pablo Caffarena become the first Bisons to play in the doubles final of the ITA Regional Championship and earn an at-large bid to the ITA National Fall Championship. Hernandez’s efforts as an assistant also helped Lipscomb advance to the conference tournament final for the first time in school history.
The top-ranked junior in British Columbia at multiple age levels—climbing as high as No. 2 in Canada at the 16-and-under level—during his prep career, Hernandez was the top-ranked 18-and-under junior in the USTA Pacific Northwest region. A four-year letterwinner playing primarily No. 1 or 2 singles and doubles at the University of Portland, he received his degree in public relations in 2012. He served as a team captain his senior year, when the Pilots were ranked a program-best No. 45.
Hernandez competed on the ITF Futures following graduation and has also served as a coach at East Hampton Indoor Tennis in East Hampton, New York, the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland, Oregon, and the Brentwood Swim & Tennis Club in Brentwood, Tennessee.
