NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Christina Wirth scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, to help No. 13 Vanderbilt beat Eastern Kentucky 80-38 on Wednesday night.
The Commodores (3-0) opened the game with a 14-0 run, including six points by Hannah Tuomi, and led by at least 11 the rest of the way. She finished with 12 points.
“I think we really started strong,” Melanie Balcomb, VU head coach, said. “We were great on defense, especially. We forced a number of turnovers, shot clock violations, and so on. They (EKU) definitely did their homework and were tough on us in the paint, so we just had to hit from the outside.”
Jessica Mooney added 11 and Jennifer Risper had nine points and eight rebounds.
“I think we are really looking to Chanel Chisholm and Jessica Mooney off the bench,” remarked Balcomb. “They have great energy and they’re really moving into leadership roles when they are on the court. Their consistency is where we need it to be.”
Kayla Drake scored 14 points to lead Eastern Kentucky (2-1). She ended Vanderbilt’s game-opening run with a 3-pointer.
Vanderbilt limited an opponent to fewer than 40 points for the first time since a 92-37 win over Lipscomb on Dec. 22, 2007.
