NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt men’s basketball guard Tyler Tanner was named a preseason All-American by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Tanner was the third-leading vote getter among the 58-member panel, receiving 43 votes. The Brentwood native averaged 19.5 points, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals last season. He was the only player in the country to hit the 19/5/2 mark.
The junior set Vanderbilt’s single season records for assists (184) and steals (86) a year ago. He also became just the second Commodore to ever score 700 points (702) in a single season, joining Scotty Pippen Jr.
The AP preseason All-America honor is Tanner’s second major recognition leading into the season after earning preseason first team All-America placement from CBS Sports. ESPN’s Jay Bilas also named Tanner among his first team All-America selections on Wednesday.
Tanner returns to lead the No. 24 ranked Commodores who open the season Nov. 2 against Bellarmine in Memorial Gymnasium.
