TOLEDO, Ohio – A pair of Vanderbilt men’s golfers sit inside the top 20 on the player leaderboard at the end of Round 1 at the 18th Inverness Intercollegiate, as the Commodores closed the first day of the tournament in 11th place.
Sophomore Will Hartman and senior Carlos Astiazaran each concluded the opening round of the Inverness Intercollegiate in the top 20. Hartman carded 1-over 72 on Sunday to end play tied for 12th, while Astiazaran went 2-over 73 and opens Monday’s Round 2 tied for 18th. Both golfers closed out Round 1 on a high note. Astiazaran carded 1-under on his back nine, while Hartman went even par over his final nine holes.
Battling wind at the always challenging Inverness Club, the Commodores ended play on Sunday at 14-over 298. Vandy opens play on Monday in 11th place on the team leaderboard, sitting five strokes out of the top five.
“It was a great challenge out there today,” said Scott Limbaugh, the Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Head Coach. “The wind really picked up for the afternoon rounds, and Inverness showed why it is a major championship venue.
“I am proud of Will and Carlos and the way they hung in there all day long. We battled really well, but didn’t finish to our standards, which is disappointing. We have to keep learning the value of being on the right side of perfect and being tough enough to do the little things more consistently well.”
A total of seven golfers in the 90-man field carded under par on Sunday, with Iowa’s Andrew Johannsen leading at 3-under 67. Iowa was also the lone team to finish under par in Round 1, as the Hawkeyes carded 1-under 283 to take a six-stroke lead into Monday.
Vanderbilt tees off Round 2 on Monday between 8:40-9:20 a.m. CT.

“There is a lot of golf left, and I believe in this group,” expressed Limbaugh. “I’m excited to see them come out ready to go from the start tomorrow. We need to keep seeing guys step up and show they can be counted on.”
