NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt volleyball improved to 2-0 on the season Saturday night, defeating Memphis 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-22) at Memorial Gymnasium. The Commodores hit .367 as a team while limiting the Tigers to a .151 hitting percentage.
Vanderbilt's offense was led by Reese Animashaun with 11 kills, while Maya Witherspoon and Samantha Wunsch added 10 kills each. Wunsch hit .533, while Kayla Dunlap finished with seven kills on a .417 hitting percentage. Avery Scoggins directed the attack with 30 assists and added one kill as the Commodores totaled 42 kills.
Defensively, Hailee Mack led all players with eight digs, while Animashaun contributed seven. At the net, Scoggins paced Vanderbilt with five block assists and a solo block, while Dunlap added four block assists as the Commodores finished with six team blocks. Mack and Witherspoon each recorded a service ace.
The opening set featured 12 ties before Vanderbilt closed on a 5-0 run to secure a 25-23 win. The Commodores took control in the second set, hitting .452 and holding Memphis to a .056 hitting percentage in a 25-13 victory. Vanderbilt built a 12-4 lead in the third set and held off a late Tigers rally to complete the sweep.
Vanderbilt finished with 38 assists and 31 digs while posting a hitting percentage above .250 in all three sets. The Commodores also held Memphis below .300 hitting in every frame.
Vanderbilt remains at Memorial Gymnasium next week for the Big Ten/SEC Challenge. The Commodores will host Maryland on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and Rutgers on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
