NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Each week This Week on West End takes a closer look at what’s in store for the Commodores in the coming days.
The top-ranked Vanderbilt baseball team begins a five-game homestand Tuesday before welcoming Georgia in for a weekend series. Vandy has won eight in a row overall.
Vanderbilt bowling will roll for another national title when it begins NCAA Tournament play Wednesday. Both Commodore tennis teams end their respective regular seasons and Vandy soccer plays its final regular-season match before the NCAA Tournament.
Here’s more on all the other happenings around West End this week:
Bowling
At 9 a.m. Wednesday the Vanderbilt bowling team will begin its quest for a national championship. The Commodores, the Southland Bowling League tournament champions, face Mount St. Mary’s first in the double-elimination, 16-team event in North Kansas City, Missouri.
Vandy last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2019 (the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19) when it lost the championship match to McKendree. The Dores won the national championship in 2018.
Baseball
Vanderbilt brings an eight-game winning streak into the week after dominating at LSU over the weekend. Head coach Tim Corbin’s team outscored the Tigers 29-7 and are now 8-1 in the SEC and in first place in the league’s East Division.
The Commodores (23-3) host Tennessee Martin (10-13) on Tuesday before Georgia (18-9, 3-6 SEC) comes to town for a three-game series starting Thursday.
Soccer
Vanderbilt has had a long layoff since a heartbreaking, 3-2 loss to Memphis in overtime March 28. The Dores have had plenty of time since then to prepare for a tough test Sunday at Duke, their final match before playing in the NCAA Tournament.
Vandy (9-5) will face a Duke squad (10-5-2) that is 3-1 this spring season with a recent win at North Carolina State. As SEC Tournament champions, the Commodores will return home after playing the Blue Devils to start preparing for the NCAA Tournament starting April 27 in Cary, North Carolina.
Men’s golf
Vanderbilt men’s golf ends its regular season starting Monday with a three-day tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Commodores have finished inside the top five in three straight tournaments, but are still looking for their first win of the spring season. This week’s Country Club of Birmingham Invitational will be Vandy’s final tune-up before the SEC Championships later this month.
Women’s tennis
Vandy, now 12-7 and 4-7 in the SEC, will be looking to break a five-game losing streak with a pair of road contests to end the regular season.
The Dores travel to Ole Miss for a 2 p.m. Thursday match before heading to Mississippi State where they play at 1 p.m. Saturday. Head coach Aleke Tsoubanos’ squad is currently in 11th place in the SEC standings.
Women’s golf
The Vandy women’s golf team will be looking to create some momentum toward the postseason as it concludes the regular-season in Louisiana.
A two-day, 54-hole tournament will be the Commodores’ final chance to create some positive vibes before the SEC Championships starting April 14 in Birmingham, Alabama. Head coach Greg Allen’s squad is coming off a 10th-place finish at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic last month.
Track and field
Vanderbilt will split its time this weekend between Knoxville, Tennessee, and Coral Gables, Florida, for the Tennessee Relays and Miami Invite, respectively.
Recently, the Commodores set three school records at the Raleigh Relays and Bulldog Relays. Through two meets this year, the Commodores boast six school records (three men’s) and 12 other top-10 performances.
Men’s tennis
The Commodores (6-13, 0-10 SEC) will close out their regular season this weekend starting with a 2 p.m. Friday match against Mississippi State and concluding with a noon Sunday affair against Ole Miss.
After this weekend, Vanderbilt will turn its focus to the SEC Tournament running April 19-25 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
