WEST POINT, Miss. — Vanderbilt continued its solid play on the course Saturday at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, but the Commodores couldn’t match some of the super-low scores posted by their SEC brethren at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
Vandy shot a stellar 5-under-par. Teams like Arkansas (-19), Ole Miss (-15), Texas A&M (-14) and Georgia and Tennessee (-11), however, were red-hot for their respective second rounds. The Commodores are 10-under-par for the tournament, tied for fifth and trail leader Texas A&M (-17) by seven strokes.
“It felt like we did a lot of good things today and had a chance to have a really good round, but just didn’t quite get the job done,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “I am super proud of the fight our guys showed and having everyone under par today should give us some confidence for a good finish (Sunday).”
Matthew Riedel remained in contention for the individual title with a 2-under-par 70 to to go 6-under-par for the tournament. The sophomore is two strokes off the individual lead and tied for third place.
All four other Commodores shot 1-under-par Saturday. William Moll is 4-under-par for the tournament and tied for ninth while Harrison Ott (-1) is tied for 30th and Reid Davenport (+1) and Cole Sherwood (+1) are both tied for 44th.
Michael Shears, playing as an individual, was 4-under-par Saturday and is also tied for ninth with Moll. A junior out of Franklin High School, Shears eagled the ninth hole Saturday.
“Matthew did an outstanding job locking in and finishing strong,” Limbaugh said. “We have to continue to clean up some simple things and that really comes down to choices and being mentally tough. We get to choose what we want to stand for and be about as a group.”
Sam Bennett of Texas A&M holds in the individual lead going into Sunday at 9-under-par with a two-day total of 135.
The Commodores are scheduled to tee off starting at 8:50 a.m. Sunday for their final round.
