Commodores host June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt’s women’s tennis team hosts the June Stewart Invitational this weekend at the Currey Tennis Center, where it will compete against Middle Tennessee State, Georgia Tech and Texas Tech.
 
Fresh off a successful run at the ITA Regionals, the Commodores look to continue their success this weekend.
 
At the ITA Regionals, sophomore Amanda Meyer returned to Nashville as champion of the tournament in singles play while Commodore duo Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak achieved the championship title in doubles play. 
 
With these victories, the Dores now earn five spots in the Oracle/ITA Fall Nationals with seniors Fernanda Contreras and Emily Smith competing in singles play along with regional champion Meyer and doubles duo Rosca and Dvorak representing the Commodores in doubles play.
 
Hosting the June Stewart, the Dores will take on Texas Tech in singles play on Friday followed by Georgia Tech in doubles.
 
On Saturday, the Dores will compete against the Yellow Jackets in singles followed by the Blue Raiders in doubles.
 
The Commodores will conclude play in the June Stewart Sunday by competing against Texas Tech in doubles followed by MTSU in singles.
 
The June Stewrart Invitational takes place at the Currey Tennis Center at Vanderbilt University and admission is free. The first serve it set to take place at 9 a.m. Friday.

History behind June Stewart Invitational:
 
June Stewart began her career in the Vanderbilt sports information office in 1973 and was named assistant SID in 1977. From 1979-90, she served as Vanderbilt’s women’s sports information director. In 1990, Stewart was promoted to women’s sports program director and assistant athletics director for future revenue sports.
 
Stewart was named associate athletics director at Vanderbilt in 1993 and remained in that position until her retirement. She was the first woman at Vanderbilt to serve as assistant SID for men’s sports and was a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee from 1990-96.
 
Stewart served as president of CoSIDA in 1990-91 and was the first of only three female presidents in the organization’s history. She was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1997 and received the CoSIDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
