CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The the Commodores earned five spots in the singles Round of 16 and three spots in the quarterfinals of doubles play in the second day of the Ohio Valley ITA Regional tournament, .
No. 1 seed Christina Rosca defended her rank by defeating Luisa Pelayo (Wright State) in the singles Round of 64; 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 advancing Rosca to the Round of 32 where she took the court against Northern Kentucky’s Luisa Zirilli (MTSU). Falling short in the first set, 4-6 Rosca quickly came back from an early defeat dominating the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-1 earning her a spot in the singles Round of 16.
Senior Emily Smith opened match play up against Diana Wong (Louisville) conquering her first victory of the day; 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 advancing Smith to the Round of 32 defeating SEC rival, Tennessee’s No. 5 Gabby Schuck in a straight set win; 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Carolyn Campana, sophomore Amanda Meyer and junior Emma Kurtz all saw victories on the courts today in singles play joing Rosca and Smith in the singles Round of 16 set to take place Saturday.
Following conquering the courts in singles, the Dores opened up the Round of 16 in doubles play where three Commodore duo’s earned victories advancing to the quarterfinals.
No. 5 seed duo, Kurtz/Campana fought a fierce battle against Bernard/Herrero (MTSU) conquering an 8-2 defeat while No. 2 seed Dore duo, Dvorak/Rosca also came out on top against Purdue’s No. 9 seed Mukhametshina/Babic, 8-1.
Closing doubles play for the Dores in Flight B, sophomore Lauren Gish paired with Tennessee’s Kylie Duckworth earned a dominating win against Diachenko/Kandyba (Lipscomb) advancing the duo to the quarterfinals of the B draw.
The Commodores open up day three of the Ohio Valley ITA Regional tournament with the Round of 16 in singles followed by the quarterfinal round. Closing the day, the Dores are set to compete in the quarterfinals of doubles play.
