NASHVILLE, Tenn. -Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend of competition on Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational with a pair of individuals finishing the event with 3-0 records in singles play.
Held at the Currey Tennis Center, the Commodores also posted two victories in doubles play at the event on Saturday.
Finishing with the pair of 3-0 records in round robin play were senior Evan Dufaux and sophomore Vijay Paul, who each won their respective groups within the White Division. Dufaux clinched group “B” with a 6-4, 6-4 win over East Tennessee State’s Predrag Burnazovic. Paul won group “A” with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over ETSU’s Oscar Posada.
The Vanderbilt Invitational was broken into six divisions in singles and two divisions in doubles. Each division was split into an “A” and “B” group with four players in each. The winner of each group was determined through round robin play.
Notching wins in doubles play were the Vanderbilt’s teams of Scott Lieberman and Andy Pulido, and Adam Baker and Dufaux.
Lieberman and Dufaux defeated ETSU’s duo of Burmazovic and Sergio Velez, 8-4, to finish the event with a 2-1 record.
Baker and Dufaux posted an 8-2 win over ETSU’s tandem of Enrique Olivares and Sebastian Serrano. With the win, Baker and Dufaux also finished the event with a 2-1 mark.
At the conclusion of the Vanderbilt Invitational Louisville and Vanderbilt played one singles match and one doubles match.
In the singles match, sophomore James Moye was topped by Louisille’s Tim Barnoud, 8-5.
In the doubles match, Paul and freshman Andy Pulido defeated the Cardinals’ duo of Pablo Camacho and Ben Clos, 8-6.
Vanderbilt will return to action Sept. 21-24 at the Southern Collegiates in Athens, Ga.
