HOUSTON, Texas – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team (3-4) dropped the first road matches of the season over the weekend to No. 22 North Carolina (6-0) and No. 30 Rice (6-1).
Still riding the high from their earlier 4-2 win over Rice, the undefeated Tarheels swept the Commodores 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Vanderbilt earned one doubles win in the contest with senior Jordan Magarik and junior Ryan Preston who defeated Tarheels Lenny Gullan and David Stone 9-8(6) at No. 1. The match marked the Commodore tandem’s first pro set of the season.
The Commodores narrowly missed the doubles point when sophomore Nik Cromydas and junior Evan Dufaux were edged by UNC’s Sebastian Guejman and Stafan Hardy 9-8(8) at No. 2. The ‘Dores were unable to follow with any singles wins.
On Sunday the Rice Owls started the afternoon contest with an early lead, taking two doubles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 to secure the point. The Commodores fell in straight sets at Nos. 2-4 to seal the Owl win.
The Vanderbilt squad will have one week to rebound before facing No. 24 Clemson in Nashville on Sunday, February 18.
