NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team started strong on the opening day of the Commodore Scramble and was able to carry that success into day two on Saturday, with multiple Commodores ultimately advancing to the championship matches of their respective brackets.
The Commodores finished the day 6-3 in the second round of singles play. One win came from a withdraw from Furman, which advanced Vanderbilt freshman Jack Lee to the semifinal round of the backside of the B bracket. The other five Dores who advanced to semifinals were Max Freeman, George Harwell, Marcus Ferreira, Panu Virtanen and Vikram Chari.
The Scramble picked back up after the break with the third round of singles play, which saw the Dores secure five wins. Marcus Ferriera clinched his second collegiate win in singles play to advance to the championship round of the front side of the B bracket.
Sophomore George Harwell likewise advanced to the championship round. Harwell leads the Dores on the frontside of the A bracket and will take the court Sunday morning.
Throughout the tournament, three Commodores have remained undefeated in singles play; Maxwell Freeman, Ferreira and Harwell. All three players will compete in the championships rounds of their respective brackets.
The Dores will return to the courts Sunday morning at 9 a.m. when the final round of doubles play takes place, followed by the singles play championship rounds.
