NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team kicked off its 2007-08 season on Friday by winning 12 singles matches and four doubles matches on the first day of the Vanderbilt Invitational.
“All in all it was a good day,” head coach Ian Duvenhage said. “I saw a lot of positives and there is a lot to build on.”
Competing at the Currey Tennis Center, the Commodores won 12 of 14 singles matches and opened the day by winning all five singles matches against Tennessee. VU also won six of eight singles matches against Louisville and its lone singles match against East Tennessee State.
Finishing the day with perfect 2-0 records for the Commodores were senior Evan Dufaux, sophomore Vijay Paul and freshmen Andy Pulido and Alex Zotov. Both freshman Bryant Salcedo and sophomore Scott Lieberman won their lone singles matches, while senior Ryan Preston and freshman Adam Baker split both of their matches.
In doubles play, the Commodores won four of seven matches. Vanderbilt finished 2-1 against Tennessee and split four matches against Louisville.
The only doubles tandem to win both of their matches was Preston and Salcedo. The duos of Baker and Dufaux and Lieberman and Pulido split each of their two matches. Lastly, Vanderbilt’s team of Zotov and Paul dropped their lone doubles match.
The format for the Vanderbilt Invitational includes six divisions in singles and two divisions in doubles. Each division encompasses an “A” and “B” group, which each has four players in singles and four teams in doubles. The winner of each group is determined through round robin play.
At the conclusion of round robin play, players/teams from both group “A” and “B” will face the player/team with their identical seed in the other group.
The Vanderbilt Invitational will continue on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with the Commodores facing East Tennessee State in singles. The final match of the day will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will pit Louisville against East Tennessee State in singles.
