Today we introduce the fifth signee of the 2011 Vanderbilt lacrosse signing class, the Commodores’ first recruit from the state of Florida, Mackenzie Smith.
Smith has been a starter for the past two seasons for Coach Shannon Dean’s Vero Beach High School squad. Smith has been a part of three consecutive state championships for the Fighting Indians and was the team’s leading scorer in the 2011 championship game (five goals, four assists).
As a junior last season, she was named an honorable mention All-American after earning first-team All-District and All-Area honors in each of the past two years, prompting ESPN Rise to include Smith on its “2012 Girls to Watch” list.
Smith has been a force on the lacrosse field since 2008, when she led the Saint Edwards varsity squad in scoring as an eighth grader. At Vero Beach, she is a three-sport athlete, also lettering in swimming and weightlifting.
Also an outstanding student, Smith was named an Academic All-American in 2011. She has ranked in the top 10 percent of her class for all four years and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Smith has played her club lacrosse for Coach Crista Samaras. This past summer she participated as a player-coach for the X-Team.
