TULSA, Okla. – Charlie Jones retired down in the quarterfinals to end his strong run at the ITA Men’s All American Championships.
Jones trailed 6-3, 3-0 before he retired, allowing Daniel Nguyen of Southern California to advance to the semifinals. Jones played dominant tennis throughout the earlier rounds of the tournament, including winning two matches that lasted over three hours a piece.
“Charlie played a lot of tennis this week, and I think it finally caught up to him today,” said assistant coach Jamie Hunt. “He strained his back in his match against Marcus Giron (UCLA) yesterday, but it was progressively getting worse and worse today. We felt like it was in his best interest to stop the match. He had a great week though, and will look to built from this result.”
Jones beat Giron 7-5, 4-6, 6-6(4-1 ret) yesterday in his second match of the tournament lasting over three hours.
The senior is ranked 102 by the ITA in preseason polls.
