Postgame Interviews with Gray, Corbin and Casali
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Gold Team scored a 6-1 victory over the Black Team in the first game of the three-game Black & Gold Series Thursday night at Hawkins Field.
Junior Sonny Gray set the tone early and finished even stronger earning the win for the Gold Team. After yielding a leadoff double to Freshman Tony Kemp, Gray retired the next three batters striking out freshman Conrad Gregor looking to end the first. Gray found the zone in the third striking out the side en route to fanning nine of the last 10 batters he faced before leaving after the fifth inning. Sophomore Corey Williams worked two perfect innings and fellow sophomore Sam Selman allowed one run on three hits in his two innings of work.
The Gold squad scratched out a run in the third inning to claim an early lead and never trailed after that. Senior Bryan Johns RBI-double scored Regan Flaherty for the first run of the game. The Gold Team blew the game open in the fifth inning scoring four runs on four hits. Junior Joe Loftus and sophomore Mike Yastrzemski each singled to start the inning and advanced on Spencer Navin’s sacrifice bunt. Sophomore transfer D.J. Luna knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice to push the lead to two runs. After a RBI-groundout from freshman Josh Lee, Johns’ single drove in the third run and sophomore Anthony Gomez drove in Johns with a double to cap the four-run rally. The Black Team’s lone run game in the eighth inning on Sam Lind’s sacrifice fly that scored junior Jason Esposito.
Seniors Johns and Curt Casali paced the Gold Team with two hits each with Johns driving in two runs. Kemp led the Black Team with two hits from the leadoff spot.
Junior Grayson Garvin was pegged with the loss for the Black Team giving up five runs on six hits across five innings. Freshman Robert Hansen allowed one unearned run on one hit in his lone inning of work. Senior Mark Lamm and junior Navery Moore each tossed one scoreless inning apiece.
The two teams square off tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
