NASHVILLE, Tenn. â€â€ The Vanderbilt Gold team broke open a 2-2 game with three runs in the second, capped by a two-run single by Andrew Giobbi in a 6-3 win over the Vanderbilt Black squad in the first game of the Black and Gold series Thursday night at Hawkins Field.
The Gold squad took advantage of some control problems by Sonny Gray in the second as he walked four batters including a bases loaded walk to junior college transfer Bryan Johns. Giobbi then smacked a single up the middle to score two more runs to make it 5-2.
Freshman Anthony Gomez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third to plate the sixth run for the Gold team.
The Black plated a run in the fifth on a RBI single by Alex Hilliard, but could get no closer.
Junior relief ace Russell Brewer closed out the game for the Gold in the seventh striking out two to pick up the save.
The Black squad took a 2-0 lead in the first when Riley Reynolds singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI single by Joe Loftus. A fielding error by Curt Casali allowed another run to score off of Gold starter Jack Armstrong.
Armstrong settled in and threw three scoreless innings after the first to pick up the win. He gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits in four innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Gold tied the game in the bottom half of the first on a RBI single by Casali and a RBI fielder’s choice by Andrew Harris.
Gray gave up five earned runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in two innings to take the loss. Richie Goodenow came on in relief and allowed one run on one hit with two walks in two innings of work. Corey Williams closed it out for the Black, and threw two scoreless innings of two-hit ball.
For the Gold, Will Clinard relieved Armstrong in the fifth and gave up one run on three hits. Navery Moore pitched a scoreless fifth with a walk and a strikeout.
Giobbi led the Gold with two hits and two RBI and Casali adding two hits as well.
The teams will be back in action Friday night at 6 p.m. Expected starters are Taylor Hill for the Gold and either Drew Hayes or Chase Reid for the Black.
