Nashville, Tenn. – Vanderbilt scored in five of the six innings of a weather-shortened, six inning game Wednesday night at Hawkins Field to beat Siena 11-4.
The Saints (1-15) took an early lead in the second inning after Ted Trymbiski doubled and later scored on a wild pitch. But for the second straight day the Commodores’ (7-10) bounced back in a big way to cruise to victory. Vanderbilt answered Siena’s run in the second with four of their own starting with a Drew Fann sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded. One batter later Anthony Gomez’s bases loaded walk put VU in front and Mike Yastrzemski’s two-run single through the left side capped the four-run rally. The Dores used the long ball in the third and fourth innings with Vince Conde lining his second home run of the season over the center field fence. Senior Riley Reynolds hit his first career home run in the fourth with a two-run homer into the bleachers in right field. The home run was Reynolds’ second hit of the day. Tony Kemp continued his hot streak with a RBI-double in a two-run sixth accompanied by a Gomez RBI-single.
Vanderbilt starter Jared Miller (1-0) earned his first collegiate win working three solid innings. The big lefty allowed one run on one hit in his second career start and was the first of three freshman pitchers to take the mound for the Commodores. Fellow freshman Nevin Wilson made his collegiate debut allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts over 1.2 innings. The lefty worked a 1-2-3 inning before running into trouble in his second frame. Brian Miller recorded the final four outs, giving up one hit. Siena starter Jim Meindl took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on one hit in just 1.1 innings.
Reynolds led the Vandy offense going 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Conrad Gregor and Connor Harrell each added two hits while Gomez and Yastrzemski drove in two runs apiece. John Rooney paced the Saints with two hits and two RBI.
After the bottom of the sixth the teams were pulled off the field due to lightning in the area with the game eventually being called due to weather.
Vanderbilt opens Southeastern Conference play this weekend at top-ranked Florida. The Commodores and Gators square off Friday at 6 p.m. CT, Saturday at 12 p.m. CT televised on FSN-Florida and Sunday at 12 p.m. CT televised on CSS.
