Boysen named assistant coach 8/4/2005 Head coach Ian Duvenhage announced that he has enlisted the support of Tom Boysen on his coaching staff, naming him assistant coach. “Right now I’m a little bit overwhelmed, but I know it’s a great opportunity,” Boysen said. Boysen has spent the last three years traveling on the pro tour as an individual coach for three different players. One of the three is former Stanford standout David Martin, whose sister Julie is a sophomore on the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team. “I’m just absolutely thrilled to have someone of Tom’s ability and stature on our staff,” Duvenhage said. “I know he’ll contribute in an enormous way.” Prior to coaching at the professional level, Boysen said he taught tennis in the Orlando area and worked with some national level junior players after he departed the University of Central Florida, where he saw some action as a player. During this same time Duvenhage was coaching at the University of Florida. “I knew him when he was at Florida but I really got to know him more on the pro tour.” Boysen said. “I had known I was going to try to make the jump to coaching collegiate tennis and I thought the best way to get in was as an assistant.” Boysen said he had been out of the country when Duvenhage came to Vanderbilt and did not even know the position was available, but jumped at the chance when he found out it was. While he admits he is new to Vanderbilt, he said he is eager to learn about the University and the program. One thing he did know about was Vanderbilt’s reputation. “I knew about the academic standards,” he said. “It was my goal to coach at a school with a good athletic reputation but also a good academic reputation. I just wanted to be associated with a university like that and a coach with a great reputation for not only putting a program together but also maintaining a top program.” |
