BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt’s Jackie Wu has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Wu becomes the first Commodore to receive the award since Amanda Taylor was named SEC Player of the Week on March 19, 2008.
Wu went undefeated in singles and doubles last week while playing against opponents from Princeton and Yale.
The Holmdel, N.J., native earned a three-set win over Princeton’s Melissa Saiontz at the No. 2 position on Saturday before clinching the match for the 20th-ranked Commodores with a straight set win over Yale’s Stephanie Kent at No. 1 on Sunday. With two singles wins last week, Wu improved to 18-4 overall and 5-1 in dual play.
Wu teamed up with fellow sophomore Chelsea Preeg in doubles to go 2-0 on the weekend. The duo swept Princeton’s pair of Monica Chow and Rachel Saiontz (8-0) on Satuday before earning an 8-4 win over Yale’s Vicky Brook and Lindsay Clark at the No. 1 position. The 30th-ranked VU tandem is 21-4 on the year, including winners of 14 of their last 15 matches and a perfect 4-0 in dual play.
Wu and the ‘Dores will be in action next as they play host to Brown at the Currey Tennis Center at 5 p.m., on Saturday.
