NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 12 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will begin dual match season this weekend against Louisville and East Tennessee State University.
Vanderbilt’s eight-player squad has the potential to be one of the strongest in Geoff Macdonald’s 13-year tenure.
As of the January 9 FILA rankings, four of Vandy’s top six placed in the Top 60. Freshman Catherine Newman leads the team at No. 24, largely due to her straight set win over North Carolina’s No. 7 Jenna Long at the NCAA Regionals during the fall.
ITA All-American Amanda Fish ranked 26th on the chart, followed by Amanda Taylor at 42 and the 2006 SEC Player of the Year Taka Bertrand at 57.
Sophomores Courtney Ulery and Liberty Sveke are also returning for the Commodores. As freshmen, the duo earned nine doubles wins in the SEC. Junior Caroline Ferrell continued to improve her game after making her debut on the FILA chart last season. Freshman Hannah Blatt went on a 7-0 run during the fall to kick off her Commodore career.
Vanderbilt will take on Louisville on Friday at 5 p.m. CT at the Currey Tennis Center at the corner of Jess Neely and 25th Ave. The ETSU contest will begin Sunday at noon.
