NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 11th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opens up play in the NCAA Tournament at the Currey Tennis Center on Friday against No. 70 Indiana State. Opening serve is slated for 1 p.m. (CT). Kentucky and Boise State will meet in the other first round matchup Friday at 10 a.m. (CT), with the winners of both first round matches facing off on Saturday at Noon (CT) in the regional championship match.
“We’re really happy to be hosting,” Vanderbilt women’s tennis head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “We think this is a really strong regional. We’re happy to host and looking forward to getting play under way on Friday.”
The Commodores enter the tournament with an 18-5 overall record. Vanderbilt, the No. 11 national seed in the tournament, will be looking to make its 10th straight trip to the round of 16. Vanderbilt is 30-13 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
Vanderbilt was also chosen as a host site for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year. The `Dores have been successful at home in the postseason, going 18-0 at the Currey Tennis Center since 1999.
Vanderbilt has enjoyed success in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores are 12-1 all-time in the first round of the tournament, with their only loss coming in the 1995 tournament against Pepperdine.
Indiana State has a 13-6 record and is currently ranked 70th by the ITA. The Sycamores earned an automatic bid to their first NCAA Tournament after defeating Wichita State 4-3 in the championship match of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Indiana State has won 11 consecutive matches and finished the MVC regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.
The Sycamores have one player ranked nationally in singles. Jennifer Migan is ranked 123rd and recently received an invite to the NCAA Singles Championships to be played in Tulsa.
“We saw Indiana State at a fall tournament and I was very impressed with them,” Macdonald added. “They had a good win over Wichita State to earn a berth in the tournament. They’re well coached. We’re looking forward to playing,”
Tickets for the regional can be purchased at the Currey Tennis Center on match days. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and students with a valid student ID.
