Coming off a 73-52 win over Delta State in Vanderbilt’s first exhibition game of the year last Thursday, the Commodores will return to the court at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when Union University makes a visit to Memorial Gym for the second straight season. Tuesday’s game will pit the Commodores against the winningest program in the NAIA, which comes on the heels of facing the all-time winningest program in NCAA Division II.
Vanderbilt defeated the Lady Bulldogs 69-48 in last year’s exhibition opener, but trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half. Tuesday’s game will be the final exhibition game of the season for the Commodores, who open the regular season at 2 p.m. Sunday against Howard.
The Lady Bulldogs have won two straight NAIA Division I National Championships. Ranked No. 1 in the preseason NAIA poll, Union is 2-0 this season with convincing wins over St. Catharine (Ky.) and St. Francis (Ill.). On Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs played an exhibition game at Tennessee, losing 86-53.
Tuesday’s exhibition game will not be broadcast on the radio or online. All regular season games can be heard on 560 AM in Nashville with Charlie Mattos calling the action. Last Time Out
Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball team opened its exhibition season with a resounding 73-52 win over Delta State. Three players scored in double figures for the Commodores, including freshman guard Christina Foggie who paced the team with 14 points.
The Commodores started slowly from the field, hitting just 36.4 percent of its shots in the first half (8-of-22). Vanderbilt’s last field goal of the half was a three-pointer by freshman guard Jasmine Lister at the 10:49 mark.
Despite Vanderbilt’s field-goal drought, Delta State, who is ranked No. 2 in Division II, could not capitalize. Like the Commodores, the Lady Statesmen experienced their own drought to end the first half as they failed to make a field goal in the last 5:40 of the half and committed seven turnovers and four fouls during that time. The slow start by both teams kept Delta State within 10 points at the half, 27-17.
The Commodores took control of the game in the second half, shooting 63.0 percent from the field and scoring 46 of their 73 points. Meanwhile the Commodores limited Delta State to 33.3 percent shooting.
The Commodroes started three guards, including freshmen Lister and Foggie. Senior guard Jence Rhoads finished with 13 points and a team-best four assists. Senior forward Hannah Tuomi chipped in with 12 points and senior forward Rebecca Silinski led the team with six rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs have won two straight NAIA Division I national championships and are ranked No. 1 in the preseason. Union has won four national titles in the past six seasons. Senior center (6-4) Zeinab “Sarah” Chan was selected as the TranSouth Preseason Player of the Year, while guard Kayla Hudson and Lavanda Ross were on the preseason all-conference team. Union is coached by Mark Campbell, who is in his 12th season at Union, which is located in Jackson, Tenn.
