NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team travels to New Haven, Conn. to compete in the 30th ITA Division I National Women’s Team Indoor Championship.
The four-day event, which begins on Friday, takes place at two sites: the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center and the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill, with Yale University serving as the official event host. Vandy enters the tournament as the No. 8 seed.
The University of California-Berkeley, is the defending National Indoors champion. Vanderbilt and Cal (7) are joined by Yale, Florida (1), North Carolina (2), Oklahoma State (3), Pepperdine (4), Georgia (5), Ohio State (6), Auburn, Duke, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
The Commodores are slated to take on No. 12 Texas Tech in first round action on Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill. Both teams faced off in late January in the Miami Invitational. VU walked away from South Beach with a 6-1 record in singles and 2-1 doubles slate against the Red Raiders.
“We played Texas Tech in Miami, but National Team Indoors will be a very different match,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “The matches will be played on really quick fast courts and we’ll have to adapt to that with a day of practice. With a tournament field like this, you have to respect everyone you play. Every team is great.”
Vandy travels three Oracle/ITA ranked singles players, with Astra Sharma leading the squad at No. 4 in the nation. Sydney Campbell joins the Aussie in the Top 10 at No. 8, with Christina Rosca rounding out the trio, ranked No. 46. In tandems, Sharma and Emily Smith team up as the 24th-ranked duo.
Last season, the ‘Dores swept No. 14 Duke in the first round of play, before falling 4-2 to Ohio State in the quarterfinals. In consolation rounds, Vandy defeated No. 7 Virginia, 4-0, for its second Top 10 win of the 2015-16 season.
