Starting LIneups

The Commodores started juniors Rod Odom and Kyle Fuller, sophomores Kedren Johnson and Shelby Moats, and freshman Kevin Bright. It was Odom’s 11th career start, Fuller’s second, and the first for Johnson, Moats, and Bright.

With the win, Vanderbilt moves to 54-7 all-time in season openers at Memorial Gym and 13-1 in head coach Kevin Stallings’ 14-year career with the Commodores. The Commodores are also 9-0 all-time against the Southland Conference all time.

After scoring only 28 points in the first half, the Commodores exploded for 52-second half points behind 66.7% shooting (18-27) and a 72.7% from beyond-the-arc (8-11). In the first half, Vanderbilt converted only 33.3% of its shots from the field and 26.7 from three.

Vanderbilt started the second half on on a 13-3 run.

Kedren Johnson led all players with 25 points. The Commodores’ starting backcourt tallied 55 points, 17 points, and 13 assists on the night.

Johnson’s 25-point effort was the first since John Jenkins scored 25 in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament against Harvard.

Vanderbilt out rebounded NIcholls State, 35-30. The Commodores scored 11 second-chance points, compared to 10 by Nicholls State.

Vanderbilt’s largest lead came at 20 with 10:09 to go in second half.

The Commodores finished the game with 12 made threes, while Nicholls State converted on seven.
