VU Men’s Golf Signs Two in Early Period

NASHVILLE, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Tenn. – Vanderbilt head men’s golf coach Press McPhaul announced the
signing of two golfers for the 2005-06 season. Jonathan Curran and Tyler Matthews both signed national letters of intent for the Commodores Thursday.

“We’re excited to have two golfers as talented and determined as Tyler and Jon joining our team next season,” McPhaul said. “Jon has been one of the nation’s
top junior golfers the last couple of years while Tyler has come on fast in recently. Both can come in and help us achieve our goals of winning SEC and NCAA championships.”

Curran is a three-time American Junior Golf Association All-American. He was named to the Rolex first team in 2004, second team in 2003 and earned honorable mention in 2002. Curran won the Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior tournament presented by St. Paul Travelers and the Scott Robertson Invitational in 2004. He shot 209 with a first round score of 66 at the Greater Hartford Jaycess Junior. He tied for second in the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic. He was a 2004 US Junior Semi-finalist at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. He tied for sixth at the Thunderbird International Junior where he posted a low score 67 in the opening round and at the Rolex Tournament of Champions. Curran placed ninth at the Greater Hartford Open Junior Classic after shooting 223. He was the teammate of current Commodore golfers Luke List and Brett Lange on the 2003 Canon Cup Team.

Matthews finished tied for sixth place at the Heather Farr Classic where he shot a 146 in two rounds including a 69 in round one. He tied for 10th place at the Ashworth Junior Classic at Diablo Grande and 16th place at the Ashworth Postseason Junior at Rancho Mirage. He fired a four-under par 68 to win the
KingCo 4A District Tournament with a two-day total of five-under 139 for Inglemoor High School Redmond, Wash.
