VU in 5th after first round of Carmel Cup

First Round Results

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Junior Theo Humphrey and freshman John Augenstein each carded a two-under par, 70, on Friday in the first round of the sixth annual Carmel Cup at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif. As a team, Vanderbilt counted a five-man total of four-under par, 356, in the first round and are in fifth place on the team leader board heading into Saturday’s play.

The Commodores trail team leader Georgia by four strokes, second-place TCU and Texas Tech by two shots, and fourth-place Oklahoma State by one.

Humphrey’s two-under par round consisted of one eagle, which came on the par-five, 511-yard second hole, one birdie, and one bogey. Augenstein, playing in his first collegiate event, had two birdies and 16 pars in his first round at Pebble Beach.

Vanderbilt also counted a one-under, 71, from junior Michael Decker, who hails from Pebble Beach, an even-par 72 from sophomore Patrick Martin, and a one-over par, 73, from senior Matthias Schwab.

“It was really great to see our guys competing again for Vanderbilt,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “There were a lot of positives for us today. We didn’t have our best stuff, but I’m really proud of how we managed a solid round as a team. Theo played well and John had a bogey-free two-under in his Vanderbilt golf debut, which was real good. Also, Michael played solid and was in control all day which really lifted the team up. We have to continue to compete the way we know how and have consistency in our performance. Golf always gives you unexpected twists and we need to be able to trust ourselves to adjust in those situations and not make decisions based on emotion.”

Individually, Arkansas’ Alvaro Ortiz has the lead after shooting a six-under, 66, in his round Friday. He leads a trio of players, Greyson Sigg of Georgia, Turner Maclean of TCU, and Fredrik Nilehn of Texas Tech, by two shots.

“I look forward to watching our guys play again tomorrow and try to be a little better than we were today,” said Limbaugh.

The second round of the Carmel Cup continues on Saturday.
